Riddle..draw the circle?

Suppose you were searching for your old drawing instruments to draw a circle. You finally succeded

in finding them in an old box. You took out the compass and to your surprise it was badly

rusted and fixed from the hinge such that two ends of compass were 5cm apart but you wanted to

draw a circle of 4cm radius. How would you use the compass to draw the desired circle?

Answer 1

increase the height of the point in the centre.

Answer 2

increase one leg of the compass until the distance between the tips is 4 cm.

or use a string 4 cm long and tie a pencil to it, draw the circle.
