Ridgefield dominates South Windsor 3-1 and sails into semi-finals of Class-L: High School Volleyball
Ridgefield boys volleyball team was able to secure itself a seat in the semi-finals of the Class L tournament by defeating South Windsor 3-1 on Friday.
The Tigers won the quarter-final match while playing at home court but the semi-final match is scheduled to take place on a neutral court. The fourth ranked Tigers have to go past the first ranked Cheshire team in order to give themselves a chance at the
champion’s title. The decisive match will take place on Tuesday but the time and the venue is still to be finalised.
The first two sets of the match were won quite comfortably by the Tigers with South Windsor putting in an almost amateurish effort. However, South Windsor rallied together in the third set of the match and was able to give themselves a chance at the quarter-final
by bagging the third set of the game. However, the Tigers did not let South Windsor get away with another win and took the fourth and final set of the game for themselves.
The captain of the Tiger’s, Mike Peckham, made the following comments about his team after they had won the match: "We're a very cocky team. A big focus of ours this year has been not worrying about the last point... The cockiness really helps with that.
All six guys go nuts after each point. If we bring that to a neutral court, I know we're much louder than most teams in the state. Other teams have to bring fans to match the energy that the six of us on the court bring."
The start of the first set of the game saw the Tigers take control early on. Once they had the lead, the Tigers kept on extending their advantage with South Windsor trailing behind all through. As a result, it was not a hard job for the Tigers to secure
the first set at 25-13. The second set progressed on the same note as the first with the Tigers bagging it easily at 25-16.
The loss of the first two games increased the pressure on South Windsor tremendously and they were able to scrap together a win in the third set at 25-22. However, the Tigers were successful in taking the fourth and final set at 25-17.
The key aspect in the Tiger’s game that led them to their recent victory was team effort. Both the attack and defense of Ridgefield were well coordinated and they kept the pressure on South Windsor all through the match. However, there were some Tigers that
roared louder than the rest.
Chris Brown, the junior setter for the Tigers, was able to make the highest number of assists for his team at 59. Brown also contributed by making eight digs and adding 11 points by executing spectacular serves. Apart from Brown, Wyatt Cooper also contributed
by posting 10 kills as well as 14 blocks. Wyatt was also able to add eight digs.
