  1. If you lose count, shift to the next appropriate gear.

If it's imperative that you know what gear you're in - while riding at speed, continuously up shift and count, then down shift back into the gear you started count.

If coming to a stop, continuously down shift until it will shift no more.

  2. You count at first, unless you get one with an indicator on the dash. After a while you just know. You get used to it.

  3. If your bikes has a gear indicator, that will tell you what gear you're in.  Otherwise, you have to keep a mental count.  Almost all bikes will have a green neutral light, though.

  4. Like everyone else is saying you just know.  Count em and keep track, but when you get used to your bike you know when youre doing a certain speed on a certain incline what the engine should feel like in 4th/5th.  It isnt going to hurt the bike to try to shift up from your highest gear, and when you roll up to a stop, click it down an extra time, and if it doesnt shift, you must be in first, so give yourself a half click into Neutral.  Especially important on the heavy clutch of a Harley

  5. You keep a metal count.

But it really doesn't matter.  If while riding, the RPM is too high, just shift up (and vice versa).

    Good Luck...

  6. keep count yourself or install a digital gear indicator yourself. depending on the model of bike you should be able to install one fairly easily

  7. On most bikes the first time down is 1st gear, each time up is second, then third etc. If you have an old shadow you'll see a light go on when in OD which is 5th or 6th. Also a light comes on in neutral.

  8. You just keep a mental count.  I lose the count sometimes, but it's really just a matter of shifting up or down when the engine RPM demands it.

Some bikes have a digital gear indicator.
