  1. Just a question: I know it has nothing to do with this but what are the names of the horses that are in the hall of fame. By any chance a Two eyed jack... or anything?

  2. If you must buy your neice a riding crop I certainly do hope that you teach her that it is an aid which is to be very rarely used. Excessive use of aids causing pain, plain and simple, is proof of bad horsemanship. Good training aims at getting the horse to be sensitive and responsive to the natural aids of legs, shifts in weight, and voice rather than harsh aids like whips and crops. Have you ever seen barrel racing alley fights when some horses resist going into the alley? Watch that rider after the rider does get the horse through the alley and into the arena and you will most often see that rider whipping the horse excessively from barrel to barrel and then back to the alley. Horses are not stupid. They remember pain and most often when a horse fights against going into that alley it is because he has learned that he is going to feel that painful whipping sting if he goes into that arena. I hope you find an appropriate crop for your neice but also with that crop I hope you teach her that it is an aid which should be rarely used.

  3. A crop is a tool, it is as simple as that and what type you buy her depends on the type of english riding she does.  For hunt seat a true crop(http://www.statelinetack.com/largeImage.... ) , approximately the length of your forearm with a medium to wide head will do, I recommend one with a wrist loop so she doesn't drop it by accident while she is riding.  Over fences I suggest a bat (http://www.statelinetack.com/largeImage.... ), this is a shorter, stiffer crop, approximately the length of your niece's forearm with a wide head, they often don't have a wrist loop so look for one with a wide stopper at the top of the grip.  Dressage you would look for a whip, a dressage whip (http://www.statelinetack.com/largeImage.... ) , with a popper on the end, not a head, these also rarely have a wrist loop.  The length should be approximately the length of your entire arm, give or take a few inches.  I rarely pay attention to brand, go to the tack store to pick one out, you can't be sure to get one you like online and as a tip, always try the whip out on yourself, I always use a whip I am considering buying on my leg like I would a horse, this tells me whether the whip is enough to get the message across without being abusive.  If she intends to show, a dark, solid color is best, either black or brown to match her riding habit.  If she simply wishes to ride around the farm then find out what her favorite colors are.  A crop can be an excellent gift as long as knowledge is passed on with it, and since you are a horsewoman as well I am not worried about that, good luck and have fun.

  4. Well just a small one.

I don't really advise using one unless it's a old school horse

Other then that she really should learn to get a better seat and stonger lower leg ?

Not to have one and just ride a bit better

I understand what your saying !

But only in real need do I let a student use one,

She's only  nine so maybe she needs a bit of a push to make the horse move, then thats  ok

P.S. I had also had a world champion in my barn

I did not show or have him then

    I got him after

Wow what a horse DASH OF DUDE ( REINING, Working cow horse etc,, )

What was your horse's name ?

  5. I would highly recommend an over-and-under whip. It slips over the saddle horn and is there when you need it while freeing up your hands. Great for barrel racing! They are inexpensive. You can get different kinds, but the braided rope ones work great. Check out NRSworld.com...

  6. the best brand in my opinion is jeffers equine

i suggest 18 to 20 inch depends on how big she is.
