Question:

Riding a road bike with running shoes

I've been riding a road bike for quite a while now using my running shoes. I am going to purchase the clip in pedels and shoes because I was told I am doing way more work pedaling in my running shoes than if I were to use the clipless pedals. So here is my question: Are my legs in better shape because I have been using my running shoes all this time? Will I benefit that much more because of all the months I have spent pedeling in my running shoes? Just curious. Thanks so much

  1. i don't really see the point in buying them, because i can't see how they will really make a difference. you are still going to be pedeling(sp?)...if you want them get them though.

  2. lol i don't think that impacts it, but if your more comfortable then go for it, what can you lose lol

  3. I don't think you are doing any more work on the power stroke of the cycling movement.  Where you are missing out is the power that you can apply to the pedals during the up stroke and when the pedals are at the top and bottom.

With clip in pedals you can apply power to the crank all the time by pulling up on the back stroke, pushing forward on the top, and pulling back at the bottom.

You will be using different muscles in you legs to do this and yes it will make a big improvement.  It may take a while to get efficient at it.

  4. as others have noted, you will be working totally different muscles (your hamstrings and quads actually) on your up-stroke. also, since your foot will be in one place, not moving around on the pedal, you will pedal more efficiently, thus wasting less energy..

  5. pedal with bare feet LOL!

  6. Well picture it like this without the clip shoes you are doing one force, pushing. with the clip shoes you are doing two forces, push and pull. doing two forces requires more work... there for keeping your legs in better shape.
