Question:

Riding bike to work...?

I live about a 5-10 minute drive from my job which is in the city. My apartment isn't in the best neighborhood and the area I go through to get to work isn't the best either. With gas prices at the prices that they are these days I'm considering riding a bike to work. I'm in pretty good shape...work out 3-6 times a week. The ride would be about 4 miles (round trip). Physically, I’m capable. Is this a good idea?

My concerns are...riding through the bad area. There's always sketchy people out and about at all hours. Another concern...and not to sound superficial...my appearance once it starts to get warmer. I work in the corporate world and appearance at my office is key. I don't want to show up at work and not look presentable.

Anyone out there ride to work? What are some tricks or pointers you have to pass on?

No buss rides...still cost $$. Riding would give me a good workout and not cost $$ (after I purchase a bike).

  1. I've done 45 mile 1 way bicycle rides to work and back...

does your place of employment have a gym/showers/etc?

if so, I'd say go for it...

if not, maybe a motor scooter would be a better choice...helix, ruckus

  2. Riding to work is a great idea, I do it everyday. As for the neighbourhood - that's a judgement call on your behalf, just try top keep a low profile (plain clothes, average bike). Your appearance at work is an easy one - just take a back pack with a change of clothes and try to get in a few minutes early so you can freshen up. I know that means leaving early, but think about the savings you're making.

  3. Here is an idea, if you have access to nearby gym, or shower facilities.  Drive in one day a week, and take enough work clothes for the week.  Then ride into work with an extra set of casual clothes in a backpack.  Ride to work early enough to shower, and change into extra clothes.  Go into office & change to work clothes.

If you have a gym close enough you can go in early and get in a workout too.  On each day you drive in, you swap out the previous weeks' worn clothes for the new set.  That is the day you plan for your daytime errands that require the car.

You could plan yourbike route for a longer ride to avoid the bad areas.  I did this for three years and rode 10 miles each way.  great way to get in shape!

  4. Your going to show up at your corporate job sweaty on your bicycle? Just think about that for a second....

I say you keep driving to work and hound your boss for a small raise.
