Question:

Riding city bus for first time?

I'm going to be riding the bus around for the first time and I have a couple questions. I'll be riding RTD in Colorado. My main concern is that I don't know the roads very well, only knowing the intersections of where I'm suppose to stop. So, will it be obvious for what stop is next so I know when to get off? How do I know when to alert the driver to stop? Also if I happened to miss my stop, what should I do then, get off and walk from where I'm at or is there an easier way to get back around to it? I have a fear of getting lost, so I'm feeling a bit nervous. Also any other advice for a first timer would be appreciated...

  1. Hi,

well, you could use your computer to check out the bus company for routes and stops, hopefully they will be available.

use mapquest or google maps or yahoo maps for checking out the area and streets you need to know.

familiarize yourself with the stops before your stop, and the stops after, so you'll know if you missed it.

every bus system is different, they may or may not have alerts for each stop, or maps showing routes in the bus, feel free to call bus compny ask for those details - if there's a cord to pull, a button to press, do they stop at each stop automatically, do you yell 'hey you, stop', they'll tell you, and they may even be open 24 hours to answer your questions.

if you have a printer, print out a bit of map so you can know what to do if you miss your stop and about how far you'll have to walk, or if it's better to take another bus - might as well grab the schedule of the buses going in the other direction, you may have to wait an hour, in which case it may be faster walking.

if no printer, then just draw it, making note of mileages.

find out how often buses come, or if there's a schedule, again, for both directions, they may not match up.

bring an umbrella, unless you're certain the weather doesn't do anything silly suddenly.

find out how much the fare is, try to have exact.

see if they have transfers, in case you can use it on your way back.

bring enough money for cab fare, just in case.

bring a sweater, lol, maybe a book, if it's a long ride.

bring a watch or phone - put bus and taxi numbers in your phone, and make sure it's charged, got an extra battery?

that's all i got, don't sweat it, print a map, put it in pocket immediately so you won't forget it, and study another copy.

you'll be just fine, allow yourself extra time, just in case.

    bon voyage!

  2. on a bus you gotta keep your eyes open man ..........and you can ways check out intersections before your intersection so you know urs is coming ahead.......call the city line for help you should find it on the web stay close to the driver so if in any case you dont know to stop the bus you can just ask him and he will only stopp at the next bus stop dont woorry bustops are very frequent so if you miss your get off on the next one and walk back ..dont worry you be fine if anything you can always ask people around you to help you and you should always carry a map

  3. before taking your seat ask the bus driver if you need to take multiple buses he will stop at the stop were the next bus will pick you up, but if it is one stop then just ask he will help

  4. Well the best advice if you really don't know what is happening is to pay attention. Be aware of where you are at all times. Listen to the bus driver, he should call the stops. And for pete sake, make sure you don't sit in hobo p**s.
