Question:

Riding instruction...for a beginner..?

I, myself, am not a beginner, but some family friends have asked me too teach there daughter to ride, as they have just moved to a farm with all the facilities, and she is very interested in horses. She is about 7 or 8 so she is competent, but I don't know what kind of things I should include to start to teach her. Obviously basic pony care and then short walks with a lead reign... but what should I teach her to do? Bearing in mind I would only have a few weeks to teach her the basics, as they live in America and Im going out to visit them from England..

help?

thanks.x

  1. Hey. start with the basics of horse care, then proper posture/leg position. Then move to a horse on a lunge line and have her get comfortable at a walk on a lunge. If thats good, balance etc. move to a trot on a lunge line and then so on. Perhaps you could accelerate based on her coordination and confidence but you would hate for her to get hurt because of being unprepared for whatever. good luck!

  2. Maybe just start with the care, like you said. And once she gets comfortable riding at a walk, you could have her trot at the end of a lunge line, so you're still in control of the horse (you hold the lunge line), and she still gets to experience and practice at the trot. If you had another horse to use, you could ride right alongside her and give pointers. Hope this helps!
