Question:

Riedell Figure Skates - Blue Ribbon or Bronze Medallion?

I'm just about to start figure skating lessons, and I'm interested in purchasing some Riedell skates, but I'm not too sure which type would be good for me?

I skated in my teens I learnt some small basic jumps, such a three jumps. I'm intending to learn the bigger jumps eventually, so I would like to invest in a pair of skates that will see me through to jump standard. It's a long way off for me I know, but I like to prepare :-)

I was considering purchasing the Riedell Bronze Medallions, but I'm concerned that they may not be suitable for me whilst I'm learning the basics again. Do you think the Blue Ribbon would be more suitable?

Thanks in advance for your help :o)

  1. if you want skates that will be good enough for you to jump in, yet not too stiff for relearning your basic skills, the Riedell Bronze Medallions should work well for you. as I'm sure someone else has noticed, the boot recommendations on the Riedell website are a little higher than what actually works. if you're still unsure, ask someone at your local skate shop.

    good luck with your skating!

(btw, a mazurka is like a side toe hop from backwards where your skating foot crosses over your picking foot in the air. ;)

  2. I feel like the bronze medallion or any of the ribbon series won't be good for you since you already know how to do basic jumps. So i suggest going for the more stiffer boot since you want to go far into the sport. So maybe a bronze star 320 series boot since it's for skater's who could do small jumps and it's also good for skater's up to single jump's.

And you say that your a skater that could do simple basic jumps like waltz and mazurka. (if you don't know what a mazurka is don't worry i don't know what it is either).

But anyway just go for any skates that you want and what your pro shop suggest's. good luck on picking your new skates and i hope you could be proficient someday.(heres the source to my suggestion) I might add something later on so good luck.

  3. Just remember that you need skates to provide right amount of ankle support for you.  This is based on your age, weight, height, how often you skate, and also level of skating.

As a skate fitter, I prefer the Gold Medallion for adults in beginning freestyle.  It is a bit more stiff than the Bronze Medallion.  I do not think the Ribbon series would give you enough ankle support for the long run.

I also would not go any higher than the Gold Medallion.  You would need to be working on single loops and flips before I would put an adult in a Bronze Star.

Start with the Gold Medallion.  I'm sure your skate fitter will also have some ideas after they look at your feet.

  4. You never wanna go down a level because if you progress quickly then the skates will not support you. I would say go Bronze medallion and perhaps even Silver. Yes they may be harder to break in and seem very tight when doing, i dont know, swizzles, but once they are broken and you start doing like waltz jumps and up to a flip, the Silver will last you and is the way to go.

Hope that helped, good luck and happy skating
