Riekus Nortje comes out on top of at the Irene Country Club leg of the Sunshine Big Easy Tour
Irene Country Club leg of the Sunshine Big Easy Tour presented by Stonehage finally comes to an end. The players performed their best as they gathered at one stage to fight for glory. The fans were happy as well with the outcome of the game.
In the end, there could be only one champion and in this case it was Riekus Nortje. The young player gave a marvellous performance and came out on top in the end.
In the tournament, Riekus Nortje scored a six-under par twice consecutively. He completed the par 72 course in 66 shots in the last two days. This confirmed his victory and made him the champion.
The closest players to Nortje in the tournament were Andre van Zyl and Jeff Inglis. The rest did not put up much of a fight and Nortje easily helped himself to his third victory in this tournament.
“My confidence is definitely at a high at the moment,” he said. “Mentally I feel a lot stronger and it feels like I can handle any situation so I’m very pleased”.
The rookie made a very aggressive start to the day. He carded five birdies only on the front nine. These made his score eleven-under par and made a good difference between him and his pursuers.
He started the back nine with a bogey, the first one for the day. One hole later, he was back on the track with a birdie on the twelfth hole. He could have made his victory even better by increasing the lead on the seventeenth hole. He had an easy chance
to card his first eagle for the day bur failed to do so.
“I actually thought it was a better round today,” he said of his six-under tour of the course. “I didn’t make as many birdies and I didn’t make an eagle but it was a lot more solid. I holed a couple of good putts. All round I was never in trouble”.
In the end, he had shown great promise and cruised to the victory. He would be one to keep an eye on in the coming tournaments.
