I have done up an old omark target rifle . I am doing the final toches. I dont want to uses the old ugly plastic grip capo what could i use instead.- I live in Oz so build a cap would be more likely than buying one. Also the blueing on the action and other parts are a bit dodgy. Is cold blue good, does it look just like real blueing

  1. you could biuld the part from wood easily enough. Hot blueing works better , but cold blueing looks alright and will be OK if you keep it clean and oiled.Brownig looks best though.

  2. Cold bluing will get you by..and protect your metal a bit more than bare steel. Bluing (or browning) your parts will look better and last longer though.

I heard friend try home "parkerizing" some stuff. He had an old electric range in his shop (for heating bearings, etc) that he used and he said it turned out well. He did warn me...don't use the wifes oven... makes a stink and a good bit of smoke.

  3. The cap is no problem, work a piece of contrasting wood to fit and finish. I have done that with Walnut and Maple Grip cap and forend. The contrast is great.

Cold blue is really for touching up spots not a big piece. Go ahead but it may be mottled.
