  1. As long as proper levels are used it should be fine. They do it at 1-3 years old all the time. To be extra safe you may want to go to a Pediatric dentist who specialize in not only seeing children only, but also have had special schooling to know proper and safe levels for children.

  2. As long as they use anesthesia... although he might suffer some emotional trauma... including a fear of dentists.  But this is common.

  3. We anesthetize children for dental procedures frequently.  It's nearly impossible to keep a kid still for hours, if hours of work need to be done.

I recommend having an anesthesiologist (NOT a dentist) administer the anesthetic.  Some dentists get a little training in anesthesia, but pediatric anesthesia should be given by an MD who has had years (instead of months) of training, IMHO.

Anesthesia will not adversely affect your child - it is probably more emotionally traumatic to deal with a dentist while awake.  We anesthetize children safely all the time.  It's part of what we are trained to do as anesthesiologists.
