  1. u need the disc to update to xp, xp is the first time windows needs a one of a kind cd key / product code. so downloading is out you need an unused cd key. you can only use Windows xp upgrade if you have the cd key/ product key of windows 95, 98 , or ME. if you don't have one, you will be waisting your money is it wont install.

  2. Kimmy, its not as simple as that, in order for XP to work, your laptop MUST have all the drivers set from the manufacture, so you need to check if they supply them on their website first BEFORE you even think of downgrading, getting XP is easy enough, but without the correct drivers, you will be in limbo as Vista no longer working on the laptop and XP is half working minus sound, internet etc.

  3. You're right, XP Home, although the OEM is really only meant to be sold with hardware, so might have to buy a spare hard drive to get that version (with it's cheaper price)

Despite the fact XP will improve system performance Micro$oft would not count Vista to XP as an upgrade, so that's no use.

Remember if you try to download a dodgy copy of XP; the Windows Genuine Advantage will fail and updates / security fixes etc etc etc will not be available, so it is better to legally buy the licence.

  4. Just wanted to correct Claire who stated MS no longer provide support or security updates on XP, which is just completely and utterly wrong.

This can be verirfied by checking here -

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/lifecyc...

"As of April 2008, Microsoft is extending availability of Windows XP Home Edition for OEMs to install on Ultra Low-Cost PCs. The new OEM end date will be the later of either June 30, 2010, or one year after the general availability of the next version of Windows."

Still being sold, still being supported and updated with security patches, I only got the last updates through Windows Automatic Updates last week and they're not stopping anytime soon.

  5. You have to use the disk, and I suggest you only do it if you have a good knowledge of computers and are sure of what you're doing. Also, I myself would stick with Vista as they no longer provide support and security updates for XP.

The link will tell you what to do.

  6. if i was you i wouldnt go back to XP Vista is SO much better
