A few days ago, i was at the tee area of hole number 4 at our local golf club and waiting for the party ahead of me to hit their next shot so i can tee off. Somebody from the party behind me i.e from hole 3 hit the ball which landed about a hundred yards in front of the tee area of hole 4. When the party ahead of me had all hit their respective shots and i began to address my ball, i yelled fore to warn the guy coming the wrong way to move out of the way so i can hit it. he acknowledge by waving at me. then i hit the ball an it went over his head and a long way behind him. this guy then comes running at me claiming that i was wrong and that i should not have hit it. and it is my understanding that it was my shot as i was at the tee and it would would have created a hold up for all the other groups behind me. and also that he should have asked my permission if he wanted to play ahead of me.

Who is right?

  1. You are. They do not have the right of way. If they are to play that shot they are to wait until they are not an obstacle in someone else's play. They should have re-teed and hit a provisional in case they were not able to play that ball. Just know that even if you are right, if you tee off over their head the range marshall will warn you or even kick you out. Even though that guy was a j******f you shouldn't hit a ball at him even though it's not "at" him.

  2. The etiquette of the game should prevail regardless of who is in which fairway. This comes under the heading of safety. If a person has encroached your fairway, give him the opportunity to hit and then clear prior to your hitting. If someone is in front of you playing the same hole, don't you give that person time to clear before you hit your shot? Use the head. Golf is said to be a gentlemen's game, So act like one.

  3. you are 100% right.  What he should have done is to wait for your group to hit their drives, and then hit his ball out of your fairway.  This is more courtesy than anything, but it can be annoying, can't it?

  4. i've seen this many times at my club you are right if they are in your fairway they must give you the right of way.

  5. Well, you were both wrong.

The person encroaching on your fairway should have gotten permission before entering.  This is golf 101. This person is pretty stupid but does not deserve to die. Don't hit.

Hitting a golf ball while that person is on the fairway, with or without permission is stupid and please realize that only you are responsible for damages that occur with your golf ball.
