Who has the right of way at a 2 way stop? The person that got there first (like at a 4 way,) or does the person going straight allowed to go before the person turning left (even if the left turner was there first)? Thanks!

  1. Okay. if ANYONE says yes to this question then you need your licence revoked. even if you are first and you see someone coming up to the intersection from another way it is good to stop and wait to see what they are doing... because even though you know the rules they might not.... so you have the right of way if

    A) you are turning right

    B) you are going straight (as well as the other person if they are going straight as well.. that is why both people can go at the same time if youre going straight)

You do NOT have right of way when turning left at this time you wait until they go as well as ALL THE OTHER CARS BEHIND THEM... you WILL get blamed otherwise.... cops can judge by skidmarks how accidents occur... be wary.

  2. i always give it to the person going straight-why risk getting hit(or frustrated) for a momentary delay?even though i do believe it to be the person who got there 1st

  3. The person who got there 1st.

  4. If you're driving and don't know this, you shouldn't have gotten your driver's license, this is something you should have learned with your driver's ed! Of course it's always the person that got there first, no matter if you're going to turn or go straight. If two people get there at the same time, we're supposed to be courteous and let the other person go first. Sorry, don't mean to be rude, but maybe you need to pick up your book and study a little before you keep driving.

  5. The person who arrives first has the right of way, assuming BOTH people actually have a stop sign.  You specified a 2-way stop.  The other 2 directions, that do not have a stop obviously have the right of way.  Otherwise, it is the first to arrive.

If both arrive at the same time, it depends on who allows who to go, but typically the person going straight will be given the right of way.  Once that first car has gone, the person turning left then has the right of way over anyone following the first car straight through.

Explain the situation a bit further, maybe we can help more.

    Added:

Based on your explanation, I do still firmly believe you had the right of way.  However, if you had been sitting there for a while, possibly the other driver forgot(??) you were there first.  In theory, a person would have been kind enough to allow you to proceed, especially if you had advanced into the intersection before him.  That being said, kindness seems to be a rarity nowadays.  Either way, I do believe you were in the right here.

  6. I think it is the person going straight.  That has been my experience, if you want to turn, you have to wait til all of the straight going people have gone.
