i have a CR4 compact rib 9'8..(it fold up so you can store it)... but still has the fiberglass v hull...it has a maximum of 10 hp on it but im putting in a console and 4 people. Right now it has a 8 hp and planes but not fast. Would putting in a 15hp work..even though it is over the limit? When i bought it i thought the guy said i can put over that horsepower but not sure...?

Thanks

  1. Likely fine. Periodically check your transom for stress cracks though...a pair of aluminum plates on either side of the transom may be in order to disperse the torque of the outboard. Horsepower ratings have a lot  to do with stress capabilities of the construction.

  2. In theory, the transom MIGHT be able to handle it...but I wouldn't recommend it!

Technically, the US Coast Guard can stop you if they suspect your boat is over capacity in terms of passengers and horsepower.

If anything happens to the transom, integrity of the hull, or really anything with the boat, your warranty will likely be voided and insurance likely will not cover it.

Four people and a console is a tight squeeze...Before you dish out some cash and labor, maybe you should consider trading up?!

  3. The 15 hp should be no problem for the boat. That same boat is rated for 15 hp in Europe. The lower hp in the US is a concession to insurance risk management. If you do go over the rated hp you do risk voiding any insurance coverage you might have.

  4. i would doubt the salesman would say you could overpower the boat, that would be alot of liability on his behalf. 10hp means 10hp, not 15. can you put a 15hp motor on and be just fine, likely.  can you be sued for negligence when the transom rips off and harms a passenger, even more likely.

  5. I used to sell inflatable boats and I just looked at this boats specs on the West page.

    Don't do it.

A fold down transom has way less rigidity and strength than a solid transom....

you are WAY overloading the boat with weight right aft

180 pound engine and a 40 pound console ........off the 880 pound capacity  leaves 660 pounds for people....hope everyone is under 150

I would NEVER recommend a bigger engine than the manufacturer's specs....first off you void the warranty.....and never put a console in anything under 11 feet........so use a smaller engine, carry less people or go to a bigger boat...with a solid transom
