Rik De Voest wipes out Erik Chvojka in 1st round – Knoxville Challenger 2011
Third seeded South African Rik De Voest thrashed unseeded Canadian Erik Chvojka in the first round of the Knoxville Challenger 2011.
The two opponents had brazened out with each other on indoor hard courts of the University of Tennessee’s Goodfriend Tennis Center in Knoxville, Tennessee, USA. It took Voest only one hour and sixteen minutes to wipe out unseeded
Canadian Chvojka in straight sets of 6-3, 6-3 on the 9th of November 2011.
Both sets were clearly dominated by Voest and overall in the match he had hit 67 percent of his first serves on target, while, he bagged 71 percent of his first serve points won. He had a strong defence which assisted him in accomplishing
a 50 percent of his total return points in the match. Moreover, he managed to save two out of three breakpoints and capitalized on four out of six breakpoints won.
Commencing the first set of the match was Voest after he had bagged the service pitch and both the challengers had managed to pocket their service games to place themselves on the scoreboard at 1-1. The players kept matching a
blow for a blow and in the following four games the score had tied at two games each and then three games each at the end of the sixth game.
However, Voest was tired of the goose chase and took out his A-game by utilizing the serve-break-serve method, he not only took the lead at the end of the eighth game but by the ninth game he had clogged the opening set with a
6-3 victory. Voest did not setup a single break point opportunity for his adversary to break him in the opening game and the third seeded South African had taken the competitive edge in the match by going one up.
The second set of the match was inaugurated by Chvojka and this time he was unable to hold his first service game and double faulted during his second serve. On the other hand, Voest had scooped two consecutive games and placed
himself on the scoreboard with a mini lead of 2-0. It was in the third game that Chvojka made a return with a hold of serve and reduced the deficit to 1-2.
However, in the fourth game, the third seed had once more held his serve and then capitalized on a break to take a mini lead of 4-1 at the end of the fifth game. During the following two games the players bagged a game each on
their respective serves and the scoreboard had progressed to 5-2 at the end of the seventh game.
Voest was unable to close the game in the next game as he had double faulted which allowed Chvojka to reduce the deficit to 3-5. Nevertheless, immediately in the next game the third seeded South African had broken back to finally
seal his victory in the match.
Voest reserved a spot in the second round of the event and will be facing American Jesse Levine.
