Rik De Voest wipes out Ryan Sweeting in round of 32 – Malaysian Open 2011
Rik De Voest, unseeded South African, defeated his 1st round challenger of the Malaysian Open 2011 Ryan Sweeting on Tuesday, 27th September, at the Putra Stadium, Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur, in a long two hour
and 13 minutes match to qualify into the second round of the ATP Tour 250 event.
Playing on Indoor hard court, the two collided, ending up with a rather easy win for the South African world No.129. Despite the disparity in ranking, the 31-year-old successor put up amazing effort to oust his counterpart and
the world No.65.
Walking down the court, the two took their sides as Voest opened up the match winning the toss. Serving for the starter, Voest stumbled down in the first game as Sweeting pulled off with a breakpoint win and served next. Igniting
the air, the old challenger broke back to level the scores next, 1-1.
Fighting off next, Voest dropped off again and lost game 3 on his serve giving away a breakpoint, 1-2. The 24-year-old extended his lead to 3-1 winning the next game and switched the serve. With a sudden serve-n-break win, the
South African levelled up the scores and stood to return again, 3-3.
Winning a game each next, Sweeting made his move, breaking Voest in game 9 and serving out game 10 to grab the first set win, 6-4, and moved on with set 2.
Voest continued to serve first serving out the first game of set 2. However, the 24-year-old American was right on the South African’s tail. The two levelled up at 1-1 and then at 2-2 before the 31-year-old served out game 5 and
blazed a forehand winner to break the world No.65 to lead the set 4-2.
Voest, continued to dominate the set and led to win the set winning 2 out of the next three games, 6-3, and levelled up the match scores, 1-1.
Sweeting, frustrated, served first in the decider. Levelling up at 1-1, the South African struck again as he broke the American 24-year-old in game 3 and served out game 4 to lead 3-1. Sweeting did cut the lead winning his respective
serves but could not break back.
With scores at 5-3 in favour of the 31-year-old, Voest took the last shot breaking the American for the 2nd time in the set winning 6-3 and the match, 2-1, to make it into the 2nd round of the event, where
he will now play Jurgen Melzer of Austria.
