Rikke Moeller Pedersen pockets Women’s 200m breast-stroke gold: Day two – European Championships
Rikke Moeller Pedersen of Denmark stunned the arena by pocketing gold medal of Women’s 200m breast-stroke on day two of the 2011 European Short Course Swimming Championships in Szczecin, Poland on Friday, December 9.
The 22-year-old Pedersen demonstrated her unmatchable swim in the 200m discipline and acquired gold medal of the event. Her immaculate stroke and gruelling efforts played a major role in placing her on top of the podium.
She remained considerably ahead of her competitors from the start of the race. She completed her initial 50 meters of the swim in a wonderful time of 31.53 seconds. She was trailed by Anastasia Chaun of Russia, who remained 1.76 seconds behind her and covered
her first round of the swim in a time of 33.29 seconds.
With her continued effort, Pedersen extended her lead to almost two seconds in the next round, where she ended her first half of the race by clocking a time of 1 minute and 07.08 seconds. She was followed by Chaun, who 2.31 seconds slower from her former
swimmer and ended her half with a timing of 1 minute and 09.39 seconds.
Chaun accelerated her efforts in the third round, where she tied hard to overwhelm the lead of her strongest opponent but she was only able to recover a small part of the lead. Pedersen ended her third round of the breast-stroke discipline by submitting
an effort of 1 minute and 43.13 seconds. She was chased by Russian swimmer, who remained 1.99 seconds slower and covered the equivalent distance in a time of 1 minute and 45.12 seconds.
The Russian elevated her efforts in the final round but she failed to answer Pedersen’s 2 minutes and 19.55 seconds effort for gold medal. Chaun remained 1.29 seconds slower from her opponent and reached the finishing end with a nice timing of 2 minutes
and 20.84 seconds for silver medal.
f***y Lecluyse of Belgium followed them on the podium for bronze medal as she completed her round in a time of 2 minutes and 21.14 seconds.
Furthermore, the championship will continue for two more days to complete all scheduled events.
