Riley Hawk to compete in vitaminwater AM Open at the Maloof Money Cup New York
After watching his father rule the skateboarding competition for over a decade, the 18-year-old son of America’s legendary skateboarder, Tony Hawk, is aiming for glory. Hawk’s son, Riley, is among the 26 amateur street skateboarders whose names have been
confirmed for the vitaminwater AM Open at the Maloof Money Cup New York that kicks off on June 5.
The 18-year-old will have a challenging task at hand when facing his competitors in New York on June 5. The line-up for the upcoming event includes the defending champion Ishod Wair, who is bound to put up a determined fight to defend his title. The list
of riders competing in the event also includes Curren Caples and Louie Lopez, further adding to the hype of the showdown that is about to take place.
The coveted reward makes winning in the New York stop of Maloof Money Cup even more important for Hawk Jr. who would be hoping to live up to the family name and walk in the footsteps of his father.
While his father climbed the ladder of success and earned fame by skating transition, Hawk Jr. is more adept at street skating. This will make him feel right home at vitaminwater AM Open which only features street skateboarding only.
The Maloof Money Cup New York will be held at the same skatepark that hosted the contest last year in Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens. The inspiration for the design of the various features of the skatepark, which includes the ledges, rails and banks,
came from the famous skate spots in New York.
Victory in the upcoming Maloof Money Cup’s first event will earn the rider a prize-money of US$1,000 along with a trip to the South African stop of the Maloof Money Cup that is scheduled to take place in September. Some of the world’s best skateboarders
will be competing against the vitaminwater AM Open’s winner in the open qualifiers in South Africa.
Joe and Gavin Maloof, the siblings who also own the National Basketball Association’s (NBA) Sacramento Kings, are the minds behind the Maloof Money Cup.
Talking about the contest, the elder Maloof brother said, “These young skaters are the future of skateboarding and there are so many of them that are just on the cusp of turning pro. This contest gives them an international platform on which to prove themselves
and it's always exciting to see who will join the ranks of pros next year. We are proud to showcase these young ams and bring them the level of attention they deserve.”
After vitaminwater AM Open in New York, the Maloof Money Cup will make stops in Washington D.C. and California’s Orange County.
