  1. Sounds like the stone might be Onyx and as far as wearing the ring all of the time,, That is what the intent of the ring is,,,, If you really wnat to know then take it to a jewler and they will tell you,,, But if you are more interested in the real value of the ring is ,, Don't be so anal  , You did say it was temporary

I have a ring that is silver and gold in color. It is marked 825. The bottom of the band is worn and looks to be a different color. Is this ring gold, silver or costume?

    Answer

    Dear Debbie,

From what you have told me, my first thought is that the ring is costume and the mark 825 is likely a makers style number or something similar.

The mark for sterling is 925 and if gold 825 would be 19.8 karat, almost 20k which is doubtful. Only one manufacturer of whom I am aware makes 19k items and that is Scott Kay, a pricey top line of jewelry. They would not be putting the extra 0.8 karat in the jewelry.

When a ring wears, generally a costume item will show wear mostly at the bottom of the ring. Look at the area of different color and see if you can see any spots or edges where a plating may have worn away, exposing a layer of metal underneath.  That is a certain sign of a costume ring and one which has been worn to the worn out stage.

Without the ring in hand there is honestly no way for me to give you a firm answer. However, from what you have said, I do expect the ring to be costume jewelry.

If you need more, do not hesitate to use the follow-up option to get back.

Thanks again. God Bless and Peace. Thomas. April 4, 2008  7:12pm

  3. While it is not sterling silver - 925 - it does contain real silver, just at a slightly lower percentage.

The black square stone could be onyx or jet.

Enjoy your gift, for the token of love which it is.

  4. I would doubt it, that seems to be a model number.

but, its the thought that counts right?

  5. It's probably "825 fine" which means it's 825 parts in 1000 silver; the rest is probably copper. for comparison, US coin silver used to be 900 fine and sterling is 925 fine.

  6. The numbers indicate it's sterling silver,& it still may turn your skin green. The stones are any oness guess, but a jeweler can probably i.d.it.You can wear it all the time,& can shine it with silver polish when needed, but don't wear it in chlorinated water while swimming. It will turn colors & be difficult to clean.
