  1. wash your horse with betadine,

ringworm is a fungus and it is probably all over your horse, i use "topical fungicide" (that is the name of the stuff) to spot treat my animals until i can wash them.  you can get it in the horse section of any farm stock store

Excellent information on diagnosis and treatment of ringworm.

You must take great care to make sure that you are not spreading ringworm to other horses by sharing brushes, blankets, saddle blankets, etc., with other horses and passing the fungus onto them.

Sometimes an antibiotic is required to deal with secondary infections that your horse may have acquired while infected with ringworm.

Ringworm can be difficult to get rid of and can be a nuisance to deal with.

Be sure to read the "use with caution" material on Betadine(7 percent)...if it is not diluted to look similar to weak tea or in a shampoo it can burn your horse's skin.

Captan "washes" are no longer recommended as Captan contains carcinogenic properties.

"Both Nolvasan and Dermazole animal shampoos contain active ingredients effective against ringworm"....."lfrazer.com"

  3. Betadine is povidone-iodine, you need to shampoo the horse with it. Or you can go to your local nursery and ask for Captan. It is an anti-fungal powder you mix 1 tablespoon per pint of water and mix. Wash your horse and rinse then spray this on every other day. Do this 3 times. Be-sure to avoid getting into eyes.

  4. Been there done that, the BEST treatment is athletes foot cream or vagisil cream from the grocery store. It cleared up my cases in about a week. Also you need to sanitize your halters, tack, brushes etc which I used listerine for otherwise it justs transfers from horse to horse.

  5. One of my horses recently got ringworm and I used Biozide ointment (it's iodine based) and it worked well, I read that sometimes it will pop back up so I kept putting it on her spots for another couple of weeks to make sure it wouldn't return.

  6. Get your vet to give you some proper antifungal shampoo. Ringworm is highly contagious and can live in wood for up to ten years so disinfect EVERYTHING (from grooming kit to fenceposts) and do not share anything with other horses. She should be quarantined from the other horses of course. A lot of people don't realise that humans can get ringworm, so check yourself carefully. Be aware of passing it on - don't handle other horses after handling yours etc.
