Rings ... Where would be the best place to have a ring valued?

... A family heirloom which Father (86 years old) thinks was his Grandmother's engagement ring, so, must be well over a hundred years old.

It is very dainty ... gold with three diamonds.

Would you go to the jewellers or an antique dealer?

I have looked at some sites on the Internet.

Thank you for your response.

  1. Any good jeweller should be able to do this - don't forget to state whether you want a valuation for insurance or scrap value if you want to sell it to the jeweller. The difference can be enormous!!

  2. A reputable independent jewellers might be the best place to start as hopefully they would appreciate the age and workmanship of the ring not just the scrap value. The BBC web site has an antiques section maybe that would help?

  3. I would go to a jeweller - and not an independent one, but one who has branches all over the country.  It will cost yyou to get it done.  Last time I needed a valuation it cost £75! But it might be worth a lot because gold prices are set to rise, and diamonds are always valuable.

  4. for insurance purposes get it valued for full replacement cost.... or else it won't be worth very much if it is not over like 2 carrots in diamonds and 18 kt gold!!! I'll tell you right now they will say its only worth around $200 but for replacement cost it will be probally 1200 to 1800!!! so get the right apprasel from the jewler.... age does not mean too much on the ring,,,,

  5. The age is irrelevant you will only get scrap value
