Rio Ferdinand backs Rooney to rediscover his form
Manchester United skipper Rio Ferdinand has backed team-mate Wayne Rooney saying he has full confidence the England striker, and knows that he will be back to his best in no time.
Ferdinand admitted that Rooney had struck an all-time low during the past few months, but nonetheless United believed in him and it won’t be long before his international team-mate gets back to doing what he does best; scoring goals.
It’s not just the Red Devils fans that are confounded about why Rooney has stopped scoring goals, so far only scoring a penalty each in the English Premier League and the Champions League.
United Manager Sir Alex Ferguson too has stated that he is happy with the efforts Rooney is showing, and believes that the player will be back to his goal scoring ways to lead his team to silverware this season.
Rooney has only managed to get on the scoring sheet twice this season. As a matter of fact the Liverpool-born player has been unable to score a goal in open play for the past nine months.
Ferdinand however claimed that Rooney has been growing in form since the dilemma in his private life, and the injury he suffered later.
While talking to media Ferdinand stated, “Everyone knows what happened over the last few weeks, but Wayne's come back and he's looking sharp again. He didn't score in the last game but he looked sharp and set up a good number of chances for other people.”
Nonetheless the defender was optimistic about Rooney’s future as he praised him saying, “It's only a matter of time before he scores and then goes on one of those runs where he scores loads of goals.”
Ferdinand mentioned Rooney’s jolly nature and how he is recovering from his troubles by saying that, “Just having him back around the place in a good mood is fantastic. He's a great lad to have around and long may it continue.”
The Red Devils skipper also talked about the injury scare he received in the final Champions League group match against Valencia. He admitted that he had been dogged by injuries over the past two years, but now he was fit and wanted to make a full return.
He told reporters that he was extremely pleased with his form, and hoped that the past injuries were all behind him, as he wanted to focus on the future now.
Ferdinand said, “It's okay, it was precautionary, coming off before anything really serious may have happened, but we'll see on Monday. I'll be having treatment for the next day or two and then we'll see how we go from there.”
He added about his performances this season by saying, “"I've played 15 games this season already, which is one of the most in the squad, so this is a good run of games for me. If I have to sit out three or four games, I'll be disappointed but I don't see
that happening.”
