Rio Ferdinand not concerned about Manchester United’s form
Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand is not concerned with his side’s early dip in form in the current season.
The English skipper had a successful partnership with club Captain Nemanja Vidic, as the side managed its first away clean sheet and win for the season. Ferdinand was part of the side that managed to defeat Valencia on the away leg, which was United’s second
win on Spanish soil in its long history. A 85th minute goal from substitute Javier Chicharito Hernandez was enough to sink the La Liga table tops Valencia, registering their second win on Spanish soil.
United would now be travelling to the Stadium of Light to face an all action Sunderland, which would be their 4th straight away fixture in two weeks. United have thrown away two in the bag victories at Fulham and Everton, having been in the lead
in the last ten minutes in both fixtures. At Bolton however, United had to fight hard to gain the point as they had to find the equalizer on two occasions in the match.
United are already three points behind table top Chelsea and still have to face the main rivals in the season, apart from Liverpool, whom they thrashed 3-2 at Old Trafford. Despite this, the former club Captain Ferdinand believes that there’s no need for
alarm.
"When you drop points against anyone you put yourself under pressure. The seasons we have lost the league have been the ones where we have given teams a head start. It seemed like we were doing that until last weekend but now the gap is three again, which
I wouldn't say it is a massive difference at this stage of the season. As long as we kick on from now and get on a good run of victories we will be all right," claimed the 32-year-old centre back.
The defender looks keen of retaining his place at the centre of United’s defence against Sunderland on Saturday, having shown some good skills against Valencia. United have had a poor record in defending their leads so far this season and have conceded nine
times in 5 matches and it seems that the partnership of Vidic and Ferdinand would be the solution to the problem.
The defender however confesses that the solution may not be so simple. Although the player seems fit to feature regularly in two games a week following his successful return from knee injury, yet he is delighted that the manager should be the one making
the decisions. The player stated that at present, he feels fit to play two games in a row. He further said that he needs to play as much as he can as he has missed so much owing to his injury. However, coming back from the injury and playing match after match
may create issues but he has accepted to obey whatever the manager decides for him. Ferdinand explained that the experience and knowledge of Sir Alex Ferguson is more than anyone on earth and it would be smart to accept his judgement. Ferdinand stated that
he would not push his case and if the manager decides to play him on Saturday, he would be delighted.
Sunderland, under Steve Bruce, has managed to bolster their squad and currently enjoy one of the best attacking players in the league. With the signing of Ghanaian star Asamoah Gyan, who partners Darren Bent up front, Sunderland are on a goals galore. The
side has made one of the best starts to the season in years, having snapped up 7 points in six matches and managed to draw against Liverpool and Arsenal. It’s a sign of good things to come and Manchester United would play on their toes in order to register
their first away win the premier league, something which they have failed to do in 3 attempts so far.
