Rio Ferdinand says Andy Carroll will learn from mistakes
England captain Rio Ferdinand says that Newcastle United striker Andy Carroll will learn from his mistakes to become a better man and player.
The 21-year-old forward, who is set to make his senior England debut in a friendly against France at Wembley on Wednesday 17 November, has been at the centre of controversy in recent months following several scrapes with the law.
He admitted a charge of assault following an incident at a nightclub in Newcastle which saw him being fined £1,000.
He was also ordered by a judge to live with his club captain Kevin Nolan as part of his bail conditions on a separate charge of assault.
However, Manchester United defender Ferdinand has tipped Carroll to learn from his alleged indiscretions and reach his true potential, just as he did as a young player.
Ferdinand told reporters, "I am sure the manager (Fabio Capello) has spoken to Andy and he has got people at his club who have spoken to him over the situations that have arisen over the last few weeks. As a young lad coming into not only the England set-up,
but also being in a goldfish bowl in the north east at Newcastle, sometimes it takes time to understand and take on responsibility.
"I had that as a young player growing up. I had to make mistakes to understand that. It's how quickly you learn and hopefully Andy will be one of the quick learners. With all the stuff that has been documented in the media, hopefully it concentrates Andy to
work harder, to look after himself, work hard on the football pitch and he will get the rewards.”
Carroll was named in the squad for the friendly after impressing Capello with his efforts on the pitch for Newcastle this season.
In 13 English Premier League games, he has scored seven goals and created two assists.
