Rio Minstrel up for taking the second outing of the career in the Boxing Day At Romford Dogs – 01708 725 213 Puppies
Perched up against the big guns in the Grade OR Boxing Day At Romford Dogs – 01708 725 213 Puppies is the very lightly raced year-old pup, Rio Minstrel. The only thing that the 4 to 1 shot for the race lacks is the experience. The D. Riordan trained was entrusted with the open race as his career debut right after four Grade T sessions. The black pup did not disappoint the connections as he delivered spot on.
Black Shaw’s dog won the Grade OR Pop Directory Enquiries Maidens on 30th November, 2012 at Romford over 400 metres. Rio Minstrel took off from one of the trickiest traps, but was smart enough to stay out of trouble.
Dressed in the black jacket, he was quick to race at a safe distance from the rest of the lot, avoiding bumps and possible crowding in the field, he saved ground on the wide end and kept a firm grip on the lead.
He completed the trip in 24.28 seconds and defeated Creamery Dallas by 1 ½ length.
The year-old has retained the fourth trap for the outing tonight, and has the same distance to cover at the same venue.
He will need to look out for the sixth stall, Islas Scolari, who is supported by 6 to 4 odds and has won once and scored second in another outing of the last four open attempts.
Besides that, the Seamus Cahill trained, is relatively more experienced than the fourth trap. Droopys Scolari’s year-old has raced at Romford, Hove, Monmore and Wimbledon.
The black hound was entered as the favourite in the Hove Puppies on 15th November, 2012 over 515 metres and delivered nothing less than what was expected of him.
He broke into a quick pace and was soon leading the field of six, making the transition to the other end in 30.23 seconds.
He cornered Downton Flyer by 4 ¼ lengths.
Islas Scolari has started off from the sixth trap, but in a training session and not a race, so tonight he will give the striped jacket his first try.
Saving ground on the wide end and avoiding clusters has to be his way around.
