Rio de Janeiro to spend $63.2 million for 2016 Olympics
The Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro has recently revealed that it would be spending a total of $63.2 million in order to carry out renovations on the stadium present in the area which would serve the purpose of featuring events both in the upcoming 2014
World Cup as well as the 2016 Olympic Games.
Like the Olympic Park would be playing the central role in the London 2012 Olympic Games, similarly, the Maracana is going to be in the lime light when the Olympics come to Brazil.
It has been planned that the stadium is going to feature the two most important ceremonies of the Olympic Games which are the opening as well as the closing ones. Not only that, the Maracana will be playing host to the final matches of the World Cup before
the Olympic Games. Therefore, the authorities’ desire that the stadium be up and ready in time for the World Cup.
However, it is not an easy task to get the stadium ready for the events as it is not only the stadium that has to undergo renovation but the whole area surrounding the Maracana would have to be restructured.
The revitalization process that will be carried out in the area includes the resettlement of several hundred people. This resettlement process is going to take place in order to provide the area with the infrastructure required for the World Cup as well
as the Olympic Games. Not only that, more Olympic venues also needs to be created in time.
The local opinion about the measures taken by the authorities in order to upgrade the vicinity of the stadium is not majorly positive as the measures taken may prove to be quite drastic for the people living in the area.
The following comments were made about the matter by a native resident of the area surrounding the Maracana, “They’re destroying our neighbourhood for a game. I have built something here – a house, a business. That’s what I want. Not a gift, not charity.
I want to keep on working and earning my money and feeding my family.”
