  1. swim parallel to the shore

  2. swim PARALLEL to the beach........ rip tides are only about 100 ft across...... if caught in a rip tide use the basic "life-saving" strokes like breast or side stroke (they are less exhausting) not front crawl b/c you still have to swim back to shore.......... Don't worry to much about rip tides though depending on where you go they aren't very common........ Have fun at the beach!!!! PEACE!!!!!

  3. Hey,

Listen, if you get caught in a rip tide swim parallel with the shore. If you can't swim any more let the rip tide take you out to sea until the rip tide stops taking you out. Once it stops, swim around it and back to shore.

    Be careful and have fun!

    Hope this helps.

  4. First of all, rip tides are NOT distinguishable from the rest of the ocean, unless you are experienced at watching for them. I have been swimming in the ocean for fifty years (and surfing in it for 42 years) and I am a fair hand at picking out a big rip, but lots of people aren't. If you are a novice at ocean swimming, I don't think you'll recognize one until it's too late. Best bet is to stay in fairly shallow water.

The MOST important thing to do if you get caught in a rip is remain calm and DON'T PANIC. If you are on a protected beach, the lifeguards will be coming for you, so just stay calm. Relax, float and wait for help.If you aren't on a protected beach, still be calm, and don't try to swim against the current, you won't be able to do it. Exhaustion and panic are what kills most people caught in rips. Float a little, relax and then begin to swim parallel to the beach. You will end up swimming out of the rip current, and be able to swim back to shore. Take breaks and float, and don't panic. Wen you start to swim in, go slowly, and let the eave action help move you into the beach.

  5. First, in general, to avoid riptides, they are usually distinguishable from the rest of the ocean. To find one, see where the current is inconsistant maybe a few ripples contrary to the rest of the water. Rip tides are sometimes darker than the rest of the water. That's how to avoid them. If you do get caught in one. DO NOT PANIC! Panicing is the worst thing to do. Don't fight it. Try and tread water for a little while and if you are unable to, float, then swim oarallel to the shore and swim back in slowly, steadily, and calmly. If worst comes to worst, let the rip tide drag you out. They are only about 100 feet long. If you need to, yell for help, but the number one rule for when in a rip tide is DON'T PANIC. It sounds lke you will be fine though as long as you stay with a friend. If you need help, they can go get a lifeguard. And always signal a lifeguard if you need help. If you're skeptical, then don't go to a beach that doesn't have any lifeguards....Hope i helped, don't worry, and have fun at the beach!!

  6. you should always try to swim parallel to the shore if caught in a riptide.

The riptide will usually pull you out so if you just try to swim "to the beach" you will find yourself further and further away from the shore. If you swim parallel to the shore, you might reach an area where there is no riptide pulling you out and then you can turn and swim in towards the beach.
