Question:

Rip van Winkle cat.?

We have an outdoor cat that was attacked the other night. She has multiple deep punctures and a broken rib.

We have to keep her inside for a couple of weeks and we presumed that would be a BIG problem. It's not. She climbed up into her box in the window and went to sleep. She only comes down to eat and p**p. And she shows no interest in the activities going on outside.

Could the antibiotics be making her sleepy or would this be a result of the trauma? She's our mouser so she has to back outside eventually.

  1. She will be ok. Sometimes anti-biotics will make an animal a little queasy and/or sleepy, so your cat's lethargic behavior is to be expected after such an ordeal.

She's probably also in some pain, and therefore just isn't active. She will perk up in a week or two, you'll see.

If she starts to get WORSE though (like not eating/going to the bathroom, or becoming unresponsive), bring her back to the vet because it could be possible she has more serious injuries that are only surfacing now.

  2. I'm not sure where you live, but using your pet as a mouser, isn't the safest way to go. She could contract diseases from the mice or other wild animals. Not to mention she could get hurt again. Or worse. Maybe you could try alternative methods to killing the mice; like traps or poisons. Anything so you don't have to risk your cats life just to get rid of vermin. That's my two cents.

Anyways, She's been through a lot. Of course she'll sleep the day away. To a helpless cat, being mauled by a wild animal is like a human getting hit by a car.

  3. Also, sleeping is the best thing for her, with her injuries.  Lets her body concentrate on healing, and minimizes the possibility of her worsening her injuries.  Plus, being unable to busy herself with hunting, she's probably bored; you should be grateful she isn't amusing herself, instead.

  4. She is just recovering...

Really she should not be going out at night.  She can mouse effectivly during the day or early morning.

Too many wild animals like to hunt cats because they are easier than rabbits etc.

PLEASE keep her inside during the night from now on.

Don't worry about her now she is just enjoying the comfort of home... like you do after a rather trying trip.

    Don't push her out.
