We are growing tomatoes in our garden and whenever one starts to get a little orangish-red the bottom gets all brown and rotten. Is there anything to do to stop this or if we pick them when they are green whats the best way to ripen them?

  1. It is from a calcium defiency, and is called blossom end rot..You need to get a good soil fertilizer with calcium in it...I got a granulated lime from Home Depot for mine

  2. This happens frequently, however I am not a gardener, however I do know a little about produce, if you want to pick them green, just let them out on a fruitbowl with the vine and place them in a plastic bag like the grocery stores use. The plastic bag creates humidity and helps the ripening process, also when you cut the tomatoes, cut the vine so it ripens quicker.

  3. It's OK to pick them while green. Just be sure to put them in sunlight and watch them each day until they are the right color red to your liking.

  4. over watering, use a  ground cover to help hold in moisture

  6. Its possible you are over-or under watering them. Sounds like blossom end rot. Here is a link
