Can I rip a CD to my computers hard drive and then transfer it to a mp3 player or do I have to purchase music from an on-line music store? I would like to transfer some of my own music to a player..... is it legal?

  1. If you bought the original CD, you can transfer it for your own use, I'm pretty sure that's legal. But people copy and transfer music to other people all the time, so why are you so concerned about it being legal or not?

  2. You can legally use several applications to rip CDs locally as MP3s.  WinAmp, Windows Media Player, iTunes, and Zune are a few.  You can also customize these apps to use other formats, change the quality settings, etc.  If you rip to a standard format like MP3, then you can generally move them onto any player.
