Rising LPGA stars pose threat to Yani Tseng's number one position
Taiwanese Yani Tseng, who desperately wants to keep her world number one position safe from her rivals, must have had a sigh of relief when she saw her archrival Stacy Lewis tumbling to the third spot last week.
Tseng has stood firm at the number one position in the Women’s World Golf Rankings for many weeks now, but players like Stacy Lewis from America and South Korean Na Yeon Choi appear to be worrying her about her hard-earned position in women’s golf.
Lewis poses a serious threat to Tseng’s top spot, as she has been playing amazingly well in the current season.
Although the top-ranked prodigy kicked off the 2012 season in an impressive style and has grabbed three LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) victories so far, she had to make all-out efforts in recent tournaments to prove that she is still as strong as she was a few months back.
Tseng looked completely shattered in the last three tournaments. The US Women’s Open 2012, which was expected to see the LPGA titan show her real skills to the crowd, proved to be a nightmare for the 23-year-old Taiwanese, as she finished tied for the 50th position on the leaderboard.
Analysts said that Tseng has been out of form in recent matches, which has given other players plenty of room to improve their standings.
With Lewis vowing to snatch the top spot in the world rankings, the still-charismatic Tseng has to do what her fans have always wanted her to do.
Although the challenge from Lewis appears to have eased off a little after a drop in her ranking, another rising star Choi has emerged to rattle the world number one golfer.
One major factor that may be upsetting Tseng is her fans’ reaction. The LPGA star said in one of her interviews that her fans like to put their trust in her game, and disappointing them will be the hardest blow for her reputation.
She said that her fans want her to remain the number one in the Women’s World Golf Rankings. However, performing below average in recent tournaments came as a big shock to Tseng and her admirers.
