We got a puppy a few month ago and he has had all his vaccines and been flea'd and wormed at the vets in June. While we were play with the puppy today he got very excited and was jumping about in everybody face and his tail hit me a few times in the mouth, is there any great risk from me getting Roundworm

  1. Dog roundworms do not develop into full adult worms in the human gut. However, ingested roundworm eggs can develop into larvae that can get lost in the human body and may, rarely, cause blindness if they lodge in the blood vessels at the back of the eye. Medically this is known as visceral larval migrans.

The eggs passed in dog faeces need to develop in soil to a certain stage before they pose a risk to human health. This means fresh dog mess is less of a risk than old dry stuff.

Worm young dogs regularly. We usually suggest every two weeks until three months of age, then every month until six months of age and then every three months for the rest of the dogs life. This regime may vary depending on where you live though, so follow a local vet's advice.

Always clean up dog mess as soon as possible to reduce contamination of the environment with roundworm eggs.

  2. no. roundworms cannot be passed to humans from animals.

  3. Roundworms cannot be passed from canine to human unless you ingest the larvae.

I would still practise good hygiene when your around the puppy though, and as a side note make sure you get your puppy is de-wormed every month, because there is also Tapeworm, Roundworm, Whipworm, Hookworm, Ringworm, and worst of all Heartworm.
