Question:

Risk of Brain Heamorrhage ?

I know this is going to sound a little silly, but last night, I bumped the top of my head on the top of a door frame. My ears blurred and I felt a little sick as I bumped. Since then, a bump has emerged where I knocked my head. The bump hurts if pushed.

Forgive me for sounding silly, but is there any chance by brain may haemorrhage?

  1. Just to be on the safe side, go get it checked.

  2. It hurts because you have bruised your head!! It's unlikely anything else is wrong, if symptoms persist, then go to A&E.

  3. To be honest, the best thing to do if you have a bump is get it checked out. In all honestly, it's unlikely, but still there is a risk of hemorrhage after a head injury. Although I will stress, it is unlikely with the type of injury you had. If you start having blurred vision/speech or dizziness then do seek help ASAP

  4. The bump itself is probably caused by what is known as 'inflammation' - i.e. the body's reaction to try and heal itself after the trauma of being bumped. That in itself is not much to worry about.

The short answer to your question is yes - there is always a risk of haemorrhage after a head injury - either at the time, or after a time delay. At the extremes of age (particularly in the increasingly old), the body is more prone to haemorrhage (bleeding) after injury, due to less padding and thinner/less stretchy blood vessels.

Feeling a little sick after a bump on the head is not uncommon. Worrying signs include loss of consciousness (i.e. passing out or still feeling woozy), persistent nausea (still feeling sick now), blurred/double vision, difficulty walking, slurred speech, confusion, etc. If you are young and it was not a hard knock and none of these features are present, then chances are you should be fine.

However if you are worried (and it is impossible to exclude a bleed on yahoo without taking all of the details and examining you), there is no harm in getting checked out and your emergency department. If they are worried by any symptoms you may have, they will perform a scan (if necessary) to rule out any bleeds. Better to be safe than sorry and/or unnecessarily worried!
