Question:

Rivalry round ... were Geelong and Melbourne the left-overs??

Like - there were so many passionate clashes this week. Tiges/Pies, Dockers/West Coast, Crows and that other team etc. But Geelong/Melbourne ... yeah two of the original clubs, sure but I don't think there's a h**l of a lot of rivalry or passion in that clash at all.

Were there other clashes like that?

Is someone aware of some rivalry that I'm not after 40+ years of following the game?

Does any other team really hate either the Cats or Demons?

  1. Melbourne V Geelong - The Big city V's the Second Town in Melbourne .... maybe that's where the rivalry comes from.

Carlton V Collingwood - Thought they were bigger Rivals than the matches played on the week end

Nth Melb V Sydney (Sth Melb) - Nth V South

Hawthorn V Essendon - Used to be a huge Rivalry between them

The SA teams -  makes sense

The WA Teams -  makes sense

Dogs V Richmond   -  libber and campbell any memories ???

Brisbane V Saints last match left ... old school Fitzroy V St. Kilda

Well ok 6 from 8 wasn't too bad as fas as those matches go

  2. because their uniforms look suitably contrasting on TV, they are  set up as rivals. Mind you, Essendon softened up the Cats!!

Seriously, a couple of the other "match ups" were manufactured, apart from the interstate teams, Hawks and kangas? c'mon, you cannot be serious. Dogs and St Kilda? they each have three colours, maybe the rivalry is about who should be the only Vic club to have three?

The whole"rivalry" thing is AFL ka-c***k at the box office, there are lots of other rivalries that are stronger, eg my Bombers and the Maggies, but that is already exploited on Anzac day.

Let's get back to A team vs B team and forget the marketing ploys.

  3. get  #@$#@ U MONGA RAYMOND C NOT FROM CANBERRA.

edit, i see what you mean rogue, this was after i got home from melb at 10.30 pm, i think it explains my answer, ray would of laughed, he knows the humour him and i have, don't you RAYMOND C. lol.

edit 2- spot on richo, just found that now, after it being brought to my attention, hahaha. long pi$$ on, 4 hrs home from melb after the footy. i was in m56.

  4. Yeah I know, it's like Sydney would rather play WC but then where would that leave Freo and where would it leave Brisbane (other than in the top half of Australia with no one who gives a sh*t). No one cares about Melbourne ATM, we all know they might go the whole season without a win so why waste a rivalry game on them and why waste one on Geelong who will thrash anyone they play.

    Melbourne + Geelong = leftovers

  5. no they were the first two ever footy teams so they were more like the first teams to be picked for rivarly round and they have played each other the most then any other teams

  6. HEY THERE RAY A, i agree mate i know they've played each other many times being the 2 oldest clubs but i would have thought the hawks would have been a better match up for a rivalry round.

p.s im hearing ya Richo, whats going on romper? have you a big Sunday sip mate LOL

  7. No. I can't see how any team would get fired up with any revalry against melbourne. They are a team of losers.

  8. One of the most fierce rivalries early in the piece was Melbourne vs Geelong, let's face it, they have been playing against each other longer than the other pretenders in the comp.

  9. First of all Gurg - you're up for the sack as troll master - the b******s are running wild around here.

And I think you're right, I dont know of any rivalry between those 2. But as I Tigers fan I dont like the cats much....we have been your biiiitch for the past 20 years or so.

Edit - Romper mate.....have you had a big day on the turps??

  10. I agree, I just figure that because they're the 2 biggest cities in Victoria they must be rivals.

  11. You are right.

I am a Hawks boy and after the proposed merger between us and the Demons I would reckon we would be the rivals (see the Melborune's Sunday Herald Sun Sports column by Shane Crawford) and from the 89 Hawks and Geelong Grandfinal I would say these two teams should have been against us not North.

Hawthorn and North really do not have a massive history except for I think the 70's but I was born in the middle of the 70's and honestly could not tell you.

It could have been Melbourne and Hawthorn and from the 90's North and Geelong you probably would have gotten more passionate games from these.

The rest of the clashes I think were fantastic. Great question mate.

  12. A better rivalry for Collingwood is Carlton - everyone knows how much they hate each other.  I dont consider Richmond a rival team at all...

  13. yeah i think it was

  14. no they werent left overs it was decided on the two biggest cities im victoria which came out Melbourne and Geelong same as Adelaide and Port Adelaide and West Coast and Freemantle
