The "River" Clyde is basically freshwater, the "Firth" of Clyde varies, depending on the tide, how far you are from the river, etc, etc. Most of the boating bits can be assumed to be salt water, although you may find at the head of some of the sea-lochs opening on to the Firth of Clyde that there can be a layer of fresh water (run-off from the hills/mountains) lying on top of the salt water.

  3. Compared to the (Aberdeenshire) Dee and the Spey, the Clyde extends into a deep estuary where it is practically saltwater.  However as with all rivers, there is a tidal limit above which there is no saline intrusion from tidal effects.
