  1. If you're going rafting for the first time, choose a family fun river like the Nantahala or the Pigeon with Class I to III rapids.  This will give you a good feel for rafting.  You will be fully outfitted and trained by your Trip Leader.  By law, you have to wear a PFD (or life jacket), know the risks, and sign a waiver.  Your leader will tell you how to sit in the raft and what to do if you fall out.  Make sure you communicate with your guide and let him or her know that you don't swim very well. Letting your guide know is huge.  I usually place those people near me in the raft so I have the ability to grab them if we do some crazy things (rock spins, surfing, etc).  It gives the guest more security too, knowing I'm right there.  Have a great time!

  2. !!! I'M A HUGE RAFTER!!! TAKE MY ADVICE!!!! LEARN TO SWIM BEFORE RAFTING, NO MATTER HOW DEEP THE WATER IS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. You do not have to know how to swim for rafting. Life jackets are provided and is necessary for all the type of rafters whether experienced or novice. The guides are there for you to help you.

I think you should also go for Class -II rafting level, get the experience in slow river and move on to next level. For Class-IV and Class-IV+ you should learn swimming.

River depth changes at different points depending on the gradient and width of the river. Depth also depends on the season. Summer will have low flow and Monsoon Season( Like In India) rivers become more violent.
