  1. That is a coastal area of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. It is roughly defined as south of Cancun and north of Punta Allen.

It's a very nice area with lots to see and do. There are water parks, cenotes (if you are not sure what a cenote is google it, they are neat), Mayan ruins, diving, snorkeling, jungle tours and much more. Playa del Carmen is the main city in the Riviera Maya. There is lots of shopping and restaurants there. You can catch a ferry to the island of Cozumel for even more vacation options.

There are many great resorts in that area, I think the best way to find one that is right for you and your Mom is to either go to the travel agent and get a bunch of brochures for the area (or look up hotels on line) and make a list of all the hotels that are in your price range and offer the services you want. Then I'd take that list of potential hotels and look for reviews and trip reports from people who have been there. (because the brochures are only going to tell you the good things, the reviews will give you good and bad)

Debbie's Caribbean resort reviews I think is a good one, but you can find others too like tripadvisor and such . I like Debbie's though because they are not trying to sell you trips and I think it's easier to navigate. Sometimes other sites it's hard to get to the reviews without looking at a bunch of ads.

This is the link to Debbie's Mexico page, if you scroll down to the Mayan Riviera section you will see links to lots of reviews for hotels/resorts in the area.

Good luck with your research. The best resort for me was Dreams Tulum. I'm not sure that it would be good for you though, it was more of a place for parents to relax, I think there are better resorts for parents and children. You know, ones with more activates to keep you from being bored.
