Riyanto Subagja ousts Yong Zhao Ashton Chen in first round of the Indonesian Open Grand Prix Gold
Riyanto Subagja, an emerging shuttler from Indonesia booked his berth in the Men’s Singles second round after beating Singapore’s Yong Zhao Ashton Chen in the first round of the 2011 Indonesia Open Grand Prix Gold, in Indonesia, on Wednesday, September 28.
Subagja played wonderful badminton against the Singaporean shuttler and emerged as the winner after a hard fought battle which took three sets of quality badminton from both players. The Indonesian took 52 minutes to win the battle against the visitor.
In the opening game of the match, Subagja played with higher level of confidence and dominated the rallies on most occasions. The Singaporean shuttler remained struggling in the first game as he failed to pick the bird early. The Indonesian set up a comfortable
lead of 11-7 in the first-half.
After the one-minute break, Subagja spared no chance for his challenger to make a comeback in the match as he displayed his wonderful skills and remained successful in winning the opening set of the match by a good margin of 21-15, in just 15 minutes.
In the following game of this entertaining contest, the Singaporean got rid of his weaknesses and played a different game. He took the bird early at the net to dominate the rallies and successfully manipulated all weaker areas of his local rival. Subagja
lost his focus as he threw many strokes out of the court and eventually gave away the set in 18 minutes with the margin of 17-21.
The final set of this close contest was absolutely thrilling as both shutters played at the same pace and remained positive until the 60-second break, when the Indonesian shuttler was slightly ahead by reaching at 11-10.
In the second part of the final set, the Singaporean remained close until the ending points when the Indonesian controlled the rallies and won the fight by a decent margin of 21-18 in 19 minutes. Subagja won the three-set battle against the Singaporean in
52 minutes by the score of 21-15, 17-21 and 21-18.
