It's not as if Rizal refused to encourage or support the revolution against Spain.  He just had a different way of "revolting" against them.

Bonificio was for armed struggle or "armadong pag-aaklas."  Rizal's revolution was more on a "peaceful" revolution that aimed to free us from Spain less the bloodshed.

Bonifacio's weapons were guns and bolos while Rizal's were his writings.
