Roach says Manny Pacquiao would like to fight Floyd Mayweather instead of Marquez – Boxing news
Freddie Roach, who is the trainer of eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao and the currently unified WBA Super and IBF Light Welterweight Champion Amir Khan, has insisted Pacquiao would love to set up a super-fight with Floyd Mayweather, who is a
five-division world champion and the current World Boxing Council World Welterweight Champion.
The 51-year-old American trainer, who is one of the most well known boxing trainers in the world, said that he knows his fighter wants to show people what they want to see. Roach then disclosed that he also wants to set up a Mayweather fight.
“The Mayweather fight is the one the whole world wants to see, everywhere I go fans tell me that,” Roach said. “For me, Mayweather is the number one choice to fight next.”
“I'm trying to get hold of Manny, to get his feelings on it,” Roach said. “If the choice is $30 million to fight Marquez or Mayweather for $100 million in the biggest fight of all time, I'm sure he'd go for Mayweather.
The Fighting Pride of Philippines, Pacquiao, who is the current World Boxing Organisation World Welterweight Champion (Super Champion), recently fought the Mexican Dinamita, Juan Manuel Marquez, in their highly anticipated trilogy bout to settle the score.
However, their third fight also ended up in a dispute with Pacquiao securing a 12-round majority decision over the Mexican pugilist. Therefore, Pacquiao’s promoter, Bob Arum, is looking for a fourth fight between the two warriors.
Roach, who is more commonly known as the Master Roach, also commented on a possible Pacquiao-Marquez fourth bout. Roach insisted he knows well what people want but sometimes there are certain reasons for not setting up a fight which they cannot publicise.
“I understand that the fans don't always get the fights they want, and that there are often good behind-the-scenes reasons for that, reasons fans and even nosy media are not aware of,” Roach said.
Mayweather’s camp earlier this month claimed the undefeated American legend wants to fight again on May 5 and he wants to take on Pacquiao.
So, let’s see if Pacquiao sets up a Mayweather clash instead of a fourth fight with Marquez.
