Question:

Roaches in coffee maker?

OK, I'm not easily grossed out, but this is pretty gross anyway. I found a little hatched egg sack with a dozen or so baby roaches hanging around underneath the filter basket in my drip coffee maker. I also saw one adult one crawl into the hole in the back where the electric cord comes out. I removed all the visible roaches and residue, rinsed out the water reservoir, shook the machine upside down with the hole in the back facing down, and ran a water/vinegar solution through it until it came out clear. How likely is it I took care of the problem? Should I expect to have to just buy another coffee maker? How can I keep them from getting in a new one?

  1. you need to spray.  then buy a new coffee maker.  put it in a different spot so they can't find it...

  2. I had this same problem when I lived in an apartment several years ago. Coffee makers  are idea habitats for roaches because their moist, humid and a source for water. What I did was threw out the old coffee maker and bought a new one, then kept it in the refrigerator over night and during the day after using it. Surprisingly it work. This might sound extreme but I couldn't figure out any other way of keeping them out of the coffee maker. I knew that roaches typically don't like to hang out inside refrigerators. I also did this with anything edible that was opened, the kind of things we traditionally don't associate with refrigeration (cereal, crackers, cookies).  You can also buy a steel percolator (no hiding spaces for roaches) and keep it on the stove or dismantle it when your not using it. Another thing to try is Instant coffee. Its in its own sealed container but the problem is it doesn't taste as good as dripped or brewed coffee, if you drink coffee for the kick in the morning, then this may be a way to go. What you could do in the mean time is get some Boric Acid and sprinkle it behind the stove, in areas behind cabinets, under the sink and anywhere else roaches frequent. This is very effective in getting rid of them because they pick the powder up on their legs, then go back and share it with other roaches, thus killing them all.

  3. If you have that many you can bet they're everywhere. You need to call a professional exterminator for this. Don't rely on store bought cures for this. Get a new pot.

  4. Yikes! Throw the coffee maker out. Get some of those roach bait traps and put them near the coffee maker and around the kitchen. For some reason, roaches like coffee.

  5. Where there's one, there's 100 more you don't see. You probably have a major infestation. The only thing I would do with the coffeemaker is throw it away. It is surely contaminated with roach f***s. You should consult a professional pest service and AT LEAST have the entire home sprayed by professionals. If you have small children, roach droppings can cause asthma. It really isn't something you should take lightly.
