cool, we'll be in both of those counties. i'd seen on-line previously that those were the areas to see it in, but i wasn't sure if it was a seldom played sport or if it were still going strong.

we'll be traveling around armagh on a sunday & thru cork on a fri & sat - is it generally played on a particular day of the week? (i assume it's a weekend activity since most people work during the week) or is it an ask-around-when-i-get-there kind of thing?

  1. i never new Armagh was big into it but if you drive out the rural roads in cork (usually west or by the sea) you will always find people bowling. Clonakilty, Knsale and other places in west Cork are the best.

    =)

  2. Try Clonakilty in west-Cork, its a very scenic area popular with tourists, I lived there for a time and road bowling did take place occasionaly.

You can get in touch with the tourism board via http://www.clonakilty.ie/ , they should be able to find out the best dates to visit.

Its also the birth-place of Michael Collins

  3. It is a pity that you will just miss the European Bowling Championships which will be held in Douglas, Cork, starting on Friday May 2nd. You could have watched  Dutch Moors Bowling and German Lofting as well as Irish Road Bowling.

The official site for The Irish Road Bowling Association below, presently has only the fixtures for the month of April listed but you could check it again in May before you come to see if they have later fixtures.

  4. road bowling is it..?...sure...up the hill between owenahincha and the Long Strand is where I came across it...the iron ball hit my car and damaged it...i dont find it as fascinating as you do...anyhow it was invented years ago by bored british soldiers based in ireland during the occupation of ireland by the english...some soldiers had nothing to do  ,so they started hurling cannon balls up roads as a sport to pass the time...hence road bowling was born...my car was expensive to repair... so im no fan of road bowling at all...!

  5. Cork and Armagh are the two centres. I would highly recommend Armagh as the world champions all come from there.

Check it out on the web.

  6. Howrya!

Road Bowling is popular in Cork and Armagh. It's not played very much outside these counties.

    So come to Cork, like.
