What kind of marks (overall and specific subjects) do you need in high school to succeed in medicine? My friend is a science wizard, but his marks are low because he's lazy, so I need to know ASAP.

  1. Your marks in high school are important only in that they will get you into college.  Medical schools don't look at high-school grades (except maybe for the few programs that accept students into the undergrad-straight-to-med-school programs).  Med schools do look at the undergraduate grades, and they look at all of them, though they do winnow out the science grades and look at them as a distinct category.  There are no absolute rules, but higher = better.

In any case, your friend's marks are his business.  If he's asking you for advice, you can tell him that med school is definitely not for people who don't want to work hard, and if he gets as far as med school he may be surprised to find that most of the people there are whizzes AND work at it, but he may just have to find that out the hard way.  ;-)

  2. get into a good undergrad program and do well in it.
