Roadtrip Ideas from St Louis to Chicago to Nashville. Any tips?

Hey there!

I'm hoping to plan a semi-spontaneous *wink* roadtrip that takes us through St Louis, then through Chicago, through Nashville. Beginning and ending are in northwest arkansas and Birmingham, AL.

The driving times between locations seems to be pretty evened out. What ways can we save money? What are some great places to go in these three cities that are cheap or free...or just really worth a splurge.

Has anyone ever gone on a in-car roadtrip? Where you sleep in the car instead of paying for a hotel except for places where you'll be there more than one night.

What would be a realistic budget for food and touristy activities and gas and all??

Here are three links; two about your St. Louis to Chicago leg, and one for the Chicago to Nashville leg. I hope you can find what you are looking for. I have been along that same route pretty much and it was really interesting to note the changes from city to city.
