Question:

Roast Beef Healthy Option?

by  |  earlier

I was considering buying some roast beef to incorporate it into my diet, which consists of low-fat meats (I usually go for chicken or fish). However, I noticed that in the subway nutrition information page, it mentioned that it's 6 inch roast beef sub only has 5 grams of fat and 2 grams of saturated fat.

When I saw this, I was wondering if roast been was a healthy option for dieters, and I considered buying some at the store (given that I"m getting pretty tired with chicken and fish lol). Is it really healthy? I can't seem to find the nutrition information for this beef online, so I was wondering if anyone can give me any pointers. Thanks!

  1. Lean cuts of beef are healthy, they need long slow cooking to be tender.  My favorite is a round roast sprinkled with two tablespoons Worcestershire sauce with half teaspoon garlic power and half teaspoon onion powder, one teaspoon seasoned salt, then wrapped in foil and put in the oven for three hours at three fifty.

It makes a tender roast with little fat, and good taste, though a bit of beef broth used as gravy helps that along.  Great sandwiches too. Or good just sliced thin.

Just stay away from the tender tasty cuts. Like rib roasts or steaks.

Marinated London broils also contain little fat, but need a marinade for tenderness. Those can be pan grilled rare but remember again to slice very thin.

Leftovers can be frozen in appropriately sized freezer bags.

Or you can have people over for dinner.

Three oz can also be added to salads for protein.

  2. A roast beef sandwich is a lovely thing...and reasonably healthy...just don't go overboard....its a good source of protein and remember, some fat is necessary for a healthy diet.

  3. I have found that if you remove all of the fat first you loose a lot of flavour.

I have found that if you preheat your oven to the maximum and put your roast in it will seal far better.

Reduce the heat after about 20 minutes and then cook at 165C per lb.

Let rest and then carve to your 3oz slices, removing the fat.

  4. The trick to eating healthy is to allow for things you want in moderation.  While Roast Beef isn't as lean as turkey or chicken it certainly can be a good source of protein.  By the way, the amount of the roast beef that Subway gives those stats on is pretty small.

3 oz??  I wouldn't give it a second thought......eat away and be happy.
