Question:

Roatan, Honduras port- what did you do?

Anyone been to that port? I've been to Belize and I figure that the dock will be about as poor as Belize is. However what did you do there? Did you take a shore excursion? Book someone off the dock? Take a cab to snorkel?

Cruise critic is kinda funny about it. I think it's a new port for Carnival. Most of the reviews mentioned what a great time they had in Belize (I agree--it was one of my favorite ports too). But very few mentioned Honduras.

What did you do? Do you recommend it? I'm going on the Carnival Glory and none of the excursions were particularly jumping out at me. We both have our own snorkel gear and some stops we could just walk out and snorkel. Some you really needed to take a boat or bus and know where to go.

  1. There are lot of postings about Roatan at Cruise Critic.  Are you sure you looked in the right place?

Sounds like there a lot of fun excursions and things to do, mostly centered on the beach and snorkeling.

  2. Roatan is very poor but it has a much safer feel to it than Belize City. As mentioned there is a zip lining tour. There are also a few very high quality private beach clubs where you can hang out on the beach, snorkle or scuba dive.

  3. I went to rotan and it was my favorite part of the entire cruise!!! the beaches were so beutiful. First we went to the local orphanage to drop off supplies (took a cab). the cab driver didnt charge us because we had brought all kinds of stuff to the orphans. then the driver took us to the beach and it was ssssssssssssoooooooooooooooooooo beutiful and that cost us about 20 bucks for 5 people. he came back and picked us up at the specified time as well. there are shops right out the gate when yuo dock so you can shop. on the beach they will take you out snorkeling or you can rent equipment right there to snorkel. thats what we did, it was like 5 bucks a person. ask where you can go diving for conch shells, and then sell the meat or give it away and you will have your own shell. you can ask anyone around to take the meat out, they love it there!! the prices were very cheap as well!!

  4. I've been on 7 cruises, 6 were Caribbean. However, I have not made it to Honduras yet. I have a friend who has taken a few cruises, too, and she has been. We were actually just talking about it yesterday, and I believe she said she went snorkeling. My memory is a little blurred because she was talking about her recent Hawaii trip, but Roatan Island popped up in the conversation. Wait, no. She did "snuba diving" there. That's what it was. She said it was a blast. It was like scuba diving, only the tank of oxygen is above water so you don't have to carry it on your back. She made it sound like tons of fun! Something I'd like to try. So I'd say, check out "snuba diving!"

  5. back in Feb we sailed the Norwegian Sun and stopped there. we did the "swimming with the dolphins" excursion. i didn't want to but i did it for my wife. what a waste of $120/pp. when you get there they break you up into groups of 8. our group got stuck with a juvenile dolphin, Anthony, that was still being trained and kept swimming off to be next to his mother (the dolphin in the group next to us).

but be sure and grab some lunch and a couple of cold ones at "Chico's" which is right there in the lot where the ship docks.

Belize we did the Altun Ha Ruins and Old Belize River combo tour. that was fun. we saw a few crocodiles sunning themselves along the river's edge, one was rather large, too.
