Rob Dyrdek performs a kick-flip car for season premiere of Rob Dyrdek’s Fantasy Factory
The professional skateboarder and reality TV star from America, Rob Dyrdek, earned the boasting rights for surviving yet another death-defying stunt after performing a 360-degree kick-flip in a Chevrolet Sonic at Southern California’s Magic Mountain amusement park on Saturday morning, December 17.
The 37-year-old daredevil performed the trick, which he dubbed as the “kick-flip car”, for the season premiere of his reality programme “Rob Dyrdek’s Fantasy Factory” that is scheduled to be aired on MTV this spring.
Talking to the leading sports news network, ESPN, about the trick, Dyrdek said, “I don't know if you can prepare for something like this. I did a bunch of random stunt training, like jumping out of windows and jumping off a roof. And I did jump the car and flipped it into [a landing pit of] boxes to get the feel of it. That in itself was scary.”
On the morning of Saturday, the American pro-skater got into a 2012 Chevy Sonic and drove towards two ramps that were 50-feet apart with a giant board between them. Maintaining the speed at precisely 43 mph, Dyrdek was able to launch the car into the air from the wave-shaped take-off ramp. The vehicle turned on its side immediately after soaring into the air and turned completely up-side down by the time it was half-way along the jump.
As the car continued to soar towards the other side of the huge board, it turned on its side once again and straightened up just before touching down on the landing ramp. The car stood still for a few seconds as Dyrdek corrected his steering before rolling away.
It was the first time the trick had been completed successfully. Over the last few days, the fear-less professional skateboarder-c*m-daredevil and his team had destroyed a number of cars while practising the trick. Even though the take-off and soaring through the air part had been perfected, some work still needed to be done on the landing.
However, Dyrdek felt more ready than ever to get the stunt done and dusted and regardless of the strong winds on Saturday morning, managed to successfully complete the “kick-flip car”.
Talking to ESPN later on, the pro-skater admitted that it had indeed been one of the most dangerous situations that he has put himself into. It remains to be seen how much impact the death-defying stunt makes on the viewers of “Rob Dyrdek’s Fantasy Factory” this spring.
