New Zealand batsman Rob Nicol has expressed the hope that New Zealand will manage to make a comeback in the final ODI of the ongoing 5-match series, to be played at the Warner Park in Basseterre, St Kitts today on July 16.
With the Kiwis trailing 1-3, the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760 have managed to secure the series, but the tourists have a last opportunity to salvage their pride, and Nicol is confident his team is slowly progressing towards that point.
“You've got critiquing from every point of view, even within your own side,” Nicol said on the eve of the final ODI. “We put a concerted effort up against them again (in the fourth match) and I think, if a couple of things had gone our way, we could have
got over the line and we'd be fighting for the series.”
After losing the first two ODIs of the series, the Black Caps managed to bring the score up to 2-1 after they secured a comprehensive 88-run victory over the hosts in the 3rd ODI. The fourth match afforded them a chance to level the score before
they could fight for the series in the final match, but the West Indies did not relinquish their dominant position for long, and clinched a series win after a 24-run win in the 4th one-day.
Despite the defeat, the penultimate match of the series featured some impressive performances on the Black Caps’ part. Although the Windies managed to rack up a total of 264, the visitors were fairly effective with their bowling. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/JDP-Oram-c1681
both claimed 3 wickets each, with the former dismissing http://www.senore.com/Cricket/CH-Gayle-c1221 on 16.
During their turn at bat, despite some disappointing performances in the form of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/LRPL-Taylor-c1849 and supporting performances by Nicol (35) and Tom
Latham (32). However, they were cut off at 240, all out – 24 runs short of the target.
“... you can always massively dissect a game, but in reality in the heat of the moment you've got to go with your gut,” Nicol pointed out. “We're slowly getting there, hopefully tomorrow we can get over the line.”
